江姓，发源于地势极低，却又在历史上赫赫有名的江陵县。《姓纂》记载：“嬴姓，颛顼玄孙伯益之后，爵封于江，后为楚所灭，以国为氏”，以及《姓谱》所说的：“伯益之裔，封于江陵，子孙以国为氏”等等。 　　由此可见，江姓的人是颛顼帝的玄孙伯益的后代，由于其始祖被封于江陵，所以当江国于春秋时代被楚国所灭之后，子孙就“以国为氏”而姓了江。而当初江国的所在地江陵，后来并曾被楚国改名为郢都，在早期历史上也是大大有名。 　　江姓的来龙去脉，可以从大约3000年前周代的江国，一直推溯到伯益，甚至更早的颛顼帝和黄帝，他们的家世背景，真可以说是既悠久又荣彩，令人羡慕。 　　在历史上，著有声誉的江姓名人相当不少，除了汉代以及南北朝时期的江公、江翁、江革、江淹、江夷、江总等人之外，在前清的300年间，像康熙年间精研心经及三礼之学，又长于步算钟律声韵，著有《古韵标准》等书的江永。嘉庆年间精于《尚书》及《小学》，有所论列辄为前人所未及的江声；博学通经史，所纂《国朝汉学师承记》，使两汉儒林家法之承授，以及清代经学之源流厘然可考的江藩；以及光绪年间出任湖南学政，与梁启超创设“时务学堂”于长沙，以取士多一时英俊而见称的江标等等，都可以说是功用传统学术的大学者。
